Breast Lift Surgery Guide: The effects of Gravity

As every woman knows gravity can have an unfortunate effect on the breasts as we grow older. Particularly after childbirth or in women with very large breasts, the skin can sag and our breasts look less attractive.  A doctor can fix this condition with cosmetic surgery. Read our breast lift surgery guide to learn more about this procedure.
A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is the ideal procedure for this condition. It is a surgery that involves removing excess skin and reshaping the breast’s tissue to provide a more elevated, youthful appearance. It is important to note that a breast lift will not really alter the actual cup size of your breasts. However, it is common to combine this procedure with a breast reduction or augmentation.
There are a few things to consider before undergoing a breast lift. The size of your breasts is important, as women with smaller cup sizes will tend to experience longer lasting results than women with very large breasts. Likewise, if you are planning on becoming pregnant, this is probably not the best choice for you. If you get this procedure, it can interfere with breastfeeding. You must quit smoking and stop using any medicine that might increase the risk of bleeding.

Details of the Surgery

A breast lift involves undergoing general anesthesia. After you are asleep, the doctor will make a small incision either simply around the areola or around the areola and downward. The doctor will reshape the breast tissue and will position the nipple and areola in a higher spot. Afterwards, excess skin is removed. The incisions are then closed up and your recovery time begins.
It typically takes up to a few months to be completely healed. Your doctor will apply bandages to the treated area. it is very important that you change these dressings exactly as instructed and to keep the incisions clean. You will be expected to wear a support bra while your breasts are healing. You must also avoid any heavy lifting or bending.  After the first few days, you should be able to shower, and pain levels usually decrease significantly after the first week or so.  You may experience moderate to strong pain at first so it’s important to follow your pain treatment plan and take the medications prescribed by your doctor.
Breast lift surgery does result in some amount of scarring. When the doctor makes the incision, they will do so in a way that places the scars in as low visibility of an area as is possible. While the scars may look quite dramatic during the healing process, keep in mind that they will fade as time goes on. In some instances, the scars may barely be noticeable.
As with any surgery, there are potential risks to consider. Besides infection or bleeding, some women also experience numbness and/or tingling in the breasts or nipples. While this usually goes away, in some cases, it can be permanent.
