The Cortical Osteotomy is a procedure that
narrows the width of the jaw
by reducing the cortical bone that forms the jaw.
A Cortical Osteotomy is required if you
wish to make many changes in the front aspect
or if the angled part of the jaw
is curled inwardly and the lower part of the jaw is enlarged
from the anterior
aspect because the mandibular angle bone is thicker.
The cortex thickness that can be removed is
about 1~2 millimeters,
so if the skin or muscle is too thick, the effect may
not be as great
as it actually could be if it’s not removed.
If square jaw surgery is to cut an angled
bone,
you may simply imagine that the cortical osteotomy is done
by cutting the
bone thinly to the side to reduce the thickness of the remaining bone.
