Breast Implants that Causes
Rare Cancer, remove film when side effects occur
Recently in Korea, a second patient
suffered from rare cancer due to
Biocell texture implant of Allergan in America.
The disease is a rare cancer called BIA-ALCL: Breast Implant
Associated-Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, which is different from breast cancer.
Usually occurs several years after
implant implantation, the main symptom is
persistent swelling and pain
near the breast implant.
If you do not have any problems after
surgery and sudden swollen on breast, you should have it tested. If it is
diagnosed as abnormal after the examination, it is known that it is almost
cured by removing the implant and the film surrounding the implant.
You can think of 'film' as a room that
traps foreign substances coming from outside. If there is a substance coming
into our body from the outside,
a film can form. Therefore, not only the breast,
but also the nose implants
and the implants of the jaw implants are formed as
well.
Should we remove the film when we remove
the breast implant? If only
the implants are removed, the probability of occurrence
of BIA-ALCL is very low. Although the incidence of BIA-ALCL was reported for
the second time in Korea, the probability is estimated to be about one-fourth
of 4000 even if it is high abroad, and in Korea, it is currently estimated to
be about one-hundredth
of 10,000.
Even in the KFDA (Korea Food and Drug
Administration) or abroad, it is not recommended that asymptomatic patients be
removed prophylactically.
Among specialists, the probability of developing
BIA-ALCL is one in 10,000.
The opinion is that the film does not need to be
removed. Moreover, cancer does not occur until there is some stimulation and
the moment the implant
is removed, the chance of cancer is much less than one
in 10000.
Nevertheless, if the fear of the occurrence
of rare cancer,
the film can be removed. Especially if you have had breast
augmentation
for more than 10 years and have recently had side effects, you
should
consider removing the film.
If the film is thin and only cleanly around
the implant, it can be removed relatively easily. In the case of removing film
surgery, a surgeon who has performed a lot of breast augmentation is not a
difficult operation.
Even for a private hospital is ready for blood
transfusions and for emergency measure, and if you have extensive clinical
experience with
breast augmentation, you don't have to go to a university
hospital
to get rid of the film.
However, the medical staff should be able
to make comprehensive judgments and decisions about the criteria for judging
whether or not the film
should be removed, what implants should be removed
after removing the film, and the prognosis when re-operating.
BIA-ALCL has a good prognosis that can be
cured without chemotherapy
or radiotherapy by removing the initial coating. As
with any disease,
regular screening is essential for early detection. If you
have breast implants
as well as certain implants, you should have a mammogram
and ultrasonography at least once a year. Regular checkups can examine
the
problems that are not revealed at all through the inspection,
and can prevent
and prevent problems in the future.
However, before deciding to remove the film
unconditionally in this situation, please check the breast first at the
hospital first, then consult with the medical staff and decide the next step.
